Internal Medicine
Where do you turn when your pet is faced with a serious medical condition or when your family veterinarian can’t determine what is wrong? Veterinary Medical Referral Service’s internal medicine department can help. With 4 board-certified internists and a dedicated support staff, we can perform the diagnostic tests necessary and focus on treating your pet. You may be referred to an internal medicine specialist if your pet is experiencing any of these problems:
• Anemia or other bleeding disorders
• Chronic vomiting or diarrhea
• Complicated pancreatic disease
• Coughing & other breathing problems
• Endocrine disease (adrenal tumors, complicated diabetes, thyroid disorders)
• Infectious disease
• Kidney or bladder disease
• Liver inflammation
• Unexplained weight loss

At your first visit, our Internists will perform a complete and thorough physical examination of your pet after talking with you and reviewing your previous medical history from your family veterinarian. We will then discuss test and treatment options which may include:
• Advanced laboratory testing
• Diagnostic imaging - ultrasound, radiography (x-rays), CT scans, MRIs
• Biopsies of masses, internal organs, or bone marrow
• Endoscopy - bronchoscopy (lungs), cystoscopy (bladder & urethra), colonoscopy (colon & small bowel), gastroduodenoscopy (stomach & upper intestines), rhinoscopy (nasal cavity), laparoscopy (minimally invasive surgery for biopsies of internal organs)
• Lithotripsy
• Hemodialysis
Along the way, we will work closely with you and your family veterinarian to provide the best on-going treatment for your pet.
